Hi SG,
I went to Hong Kong as part of my honeymoon in 2004/05, which was some time ago now, so others may have more up to date suggestions. We spent five days there which I think was a bit long for me (ex-city girl, now living in the sticks - cities are too full for me these days). We stayed in a random hotel on Hong Kong Island and I definitely recommend crossing over to the mainland on the Star Ferries - very cheap and quick. On the island, go up the funicular railway to The Peak at Victoria - go up during the day and see it through until it's dark - some great views if the fog/smog isn't too bad. As with most cities, I enjoyed wandering around on foot - there are some lovely city gardens to people watch in - and taking in the smells and sounds of the city. The bamboo scaffolding everywhere is something else! I loved the science museum (I am a bit geeky like that - I always visit a city's science/engineering museum, wherever I travel) - it's a hands on one, similar to the Launchpad at the London Science Museum. A visit to Lantau Island to see the monastery and the giant Buddha is worth it if you have time. Check out a guide book for how to get there. I think we took a couple of ferries and at least one bus. It's a bit of a trek but I thought it was interesting and good to get out of the city. Erm...will check with my husband to see if there's anything else to recommend. It seems like a long time ago since we were there! Are you going as a final destination or en route to elsewhere? It was our first stop on a round the world trip - we went on to New Zealand and then the Cook Islands (six week trip). What I don't recommend is contracting some dog-awful fluey cold on the flight to HK. It was still in my system four weeks later and totally knocked my fitness for walking in NZ. Bleurgh... childfree - yippeeee!

My visit was even longer ago than Puds - June 97 in fact, so still under British rule at the time!
However, I'd still agree with 'wot she said' and just add that I also enjoyed Stanley Market and really just browsing around the local shops, however sad it was to see all those poor tasty ducks hanging by their necks. (Dead, I hasten to add). We were totally screwed by the fog for the whoe of our visit, so keep an eye on the weather and head up to the Peak the split second it looks good, you might not get another chance. You are an angel heading for a land of sunshine. Fortune is smiling upon you.

I went to Hong Kong in 1998 (the picture on our heading is of Hong Kong). I did not really enjoy it but at the time they had just been released from British rule so being a brit it was not a great time to visit. However we had friends recently go out and they absolutely loved it. I would highly recommend someone to visit though as it is so completely different. Childfree means freedom,
why the hell would you want to give that up.

Cheers Mrs Mars Bar. So what did you not like about it?

Well you have to remember the British did not hand Hong Kong back to the Chinese until 1997, so the British were not popular when we went. However I do not
want that to put you off as I know others who have been more recently and loved it. I just think our timing was wrong.

I've been there a couple of times, ex worked there for a few months in '95 so I spent a couple of weeks there then and then went back for a few days in
'98. Definitely agree with what others have recommended. Cafe Deco at The Peak is a lovely restaurant for a
special night out - I can recommend the roast pigeon. And Dan Ryan's was good for something more
casual and drunken (but not cheap) - but remember I was there years ago so don't blame me if it's rubbish
. For one thing I see they have a kids' menu on their website, but there
sure as hell weren't any kids whenever I've been there. Drunk business types more like it. Service and food was amazing though.
As with anywhere it's worth getting off the beaten track a bit - it's amazing how different the 'suburbs' a few streets back from the busy streets are. And / or get one of the local (non-tourist) ferries to one of the smaller islands and have a look around. But if you're only doing one ferry trip then Lantau for the Buddha is definitely the one! Have a great time whatever you get up to! |

My husband has reminded me about riding the Mid Level Escalators on Hong Kong Island - worth it if you have a few hours to spare and enjoy
nosing your way around interesting shopping and then residential districts. I think we got as far up as they went and then walked back down to the water's
edge again. Very interesting to see the tall tower blocks close up (made me hanker for my rural idyll!).
childfree - yippeeee!

Hi SG, I went to Hong Kong in February 05 with my dad. We stayed in the Renaissance Hotel in Kowloon, it was really nice so would recommend, breakfast and
dinner were gorgeous and they have an outdoor pool. It was Chinese New Year at the time and they celebrated it in a big way, there were loads of displays with
dancing dragons and there were giant chicks everywhere (it was Year of the Cock). I went to The Peak too, definitely worth a visit. We visited a few temples,
went to the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, oh and the Chi Lin Nunnery too. I don't think we caught the ferry cos we were only there 3 days
(memory is hazy) but it's easy enough to get the Star Ferry if you want to see the giant buddha!
PS. Mrs M I have always wondered about those pictures at the top, what are the other ones of? |

I'd love to go to Hong Kong but I hate long flights. My Dad was sent there quite often with his work and would bring back all these exotic goodies. Very
exciting.

Thanks for that payne
I know what you mean dontwantany about the flights. I was fine on the way out but it was really turbulent on way home. I was popping valium, antihistamines and anything I could get my hands on to make me go to sleep. Had fab time in Hong Kong though. Went to disneyland, up to the peak, to Lantau to see the giant buddah, Stanley market (where I got my fortune read by an old chinese man and he made me cry How good is the shopping?! Wish I had more money to spend although I think I would have bankrupted us if I'd bought everything I wanted. |
