This is a bit sad, but I just had to swing by to say how fantastic I thought Waters Of Mars was! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As much as I kinda enjoyed Planet Of The Dead (the one with the bus), this was sooooooooo much better!
And it nicely sets up the tone, if not exactly the events of the christmas specials. What an ending.... |

I liked the ending, excellent twist to it and, as you say, sets things up nicely for the coming episodes.

It seemed to be made up of bits of other episodes, crossed with a very cliched zombie format. Not good. I liked it a bit more at the end, when he went a bit dark, but I think that's only cos his eyes were flashing!

Well, sorry to gush (and I only really do that with certain things - most TV is bloody awful these days), but I'm actually thinking this might be one of Tennant's best episodes. Back in the 80s, Peter Davison had his best story right at the end, The Caves Of Androzani. It was a dark and scary story which ended with him saving his companion and regenerating. The Doctor acted quite out of character for much of the story and it was all-round brilliant. (It recently got voted best DW story of all time.) Waters Of Mars is very similar in tone to that, but goes more to the heart of the character of the Doc and sees what would happen if he goes over the edge. I loved the atmosphere which was very much like an Alien film, the characters were just well-rounded enough without giving them too much weighty back-story and I even liked the deliberately-naff robot. But the best thing of all is the Doctor himself. Tennant's performance was as good as he's ever been, just enough humour in the right places and completely manic when he needs to be. This story points out a few things: 1. The Doctor needs a companion. But more than that... 2. The Doctor needs the Time Lords top stop him going too far. But when he does go too far... 3. He's crossed the line and frankly deserves his coming regeneration. And I never thought I'd say that about any Doctor, particularly this one. This is the sort of story that would have worked really well at the end of Chris Eccleston's run, but the fact that it's happened with Tennant makes it all the more dark and tragic. I reckon if you didn't like this story, you'll reeeeeeeally not like the christmas episodes.

I don't know much about the xmas episodes and I'm trying to avoid spoilers (la-la-la-I'm-not-listening!) However and in the spirit of trying to
lower expectations, I can confidently predict that they're going to be anything but a laugh riot. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they're going
to be incredibly downbeat, but from what I saw of that quick-cutting, well-edited trailer - the story is going to be fricking
batshit insane.
If you're a purely Tennant fan - chocolates and box-of-tissues on standby and prepare for the worst, consoling yourself that he's going to be a busy boy after he's finished on Who, what with his numerous film roles and the new American TV series he's in. The last 4 years have been fun though, haven't they? If you're a Dr Who fan - get ready for a roller-coaster with the prospect of the always-going-to-happen regeneration at the end, which has always been something to look forward to, whatever you think of the current Doctor. (And from what I hear of the filming reports for next series, Matt Smith sounds like he's going to be great. Sorry, DT-fans.) If you're both (like me) - sit back and enjoy the ride, as tragic as it may be. But keep the chocolates on standby anyway. Also, here's a little nugget - Tennant has often said he's always willing to come back in a few years for a possible multi-Doctor story. He is a time-traveller after all.

I thought it had interesting ideas, but I can't help feeling that it was a bit odd that by doing what he always does (saving people) the Doc was suddenly
the baddy, because sometimes you shouldn't save people. You should let them die because their grandchildren might then do glamorous or something that makes
people rich. Eh? I;m unconvinced.

That was certainly a fairly major plot-hole, if I'm honest. The Doctor goes on about these supposed "fixed-points in time" that have to happen so
that the future can carry on as normal - then he goes loopy, ignores his own advice and alters a pretty major event. He's damn lucky that time sorted
itself out an the end. And all this after he shows the consequences of Rose saving her own dad's life back in Eccleston's series! That was a plot-hole
you could park a Tardis in.
Unfortunately, Dr Who is a series that's had a somewhat shaky relationship with its own continuity - it contradicts itself all the time. You wouldn't believe the amount of alternate histories the Daleks have had over the decades... |

I don't understand how it did fix itself anyway. The grandma killed herself in her house for absolutely no reason, how was that as inspirational for her
granddaughter as dying in a nuclear explosion to save the human race!?

I'm probably going to wait until the end of the week - it gets collected into a single 45-minute episode on Saturday. I've got to say, from what little
I've seen, I'm somewhat underwhelmed by the quality of the animation. Looks a bit cheap. But this is amongst the last we'll get of Tennant's
Doctor, so I'll take what I can get.
Also, I'm trying to spread out my Dr Who - it's going to be five looooong weeks until christmas. Did anyone see the CIN clip? It's available on Youtube, if you can find it. Very interesting - doesn't give away any spoilers and it's quite funny. |
